What is Plantaben and what is it used for?

Plantaben is a medicine whose active ingredient is the cuticles of Plantago Ovata seeds (Ispaghula husk). It belongs to the bulk-forming laxatives.

Consult a doctor if your condition worsens or does not improve after 3 days.

How does Plantaben work?

The husks of Plantago Ovata seeds, the active ingredient in Plantaben, have a high capacity to retain fluid, increase the volume of faecal matter and give it a consistency that regulates intestinal transit.

What is Plantaben used for?

Plantaben is indicated as a laxative to treat the symptoms of constipation.

It is also used to facilitate stool passage when bowel movements are painful, such as after rectal or anal surgery, haemorrhoids and anal fissures.

How should Plantaben be taken?

Dosage

  • The dose for adults, the elderly and children over 12 years of age is: 2 to 3 sachets per day, depending on need and response.

  • The dose for children aged 6 to 12 years is: 1 to 2 sachets per day, depending on need and response.

Oral administration

  • Empty the contents of the sachet into a glass of cold water or any other liquid, approximately 200ml.

  • Stir the mixture until it is uniform and drink immediately.

  • It is recommended to drink another glass of liquid afterwards.

  • Do not take the preparation and lie down immediately afterwards.

  • It is also recommended to drink 1 to 2 litres of water throughout the day of treatment.

  • Avoid inhaling the powder during preparation.

Use of Plantaben and children

Not recommended for use in children under 6 years of age.

Use of Plantaben with other medicines

  • Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines.

  • In some cases, to space it out from taking other medicines so as not to hinder their absorption.

  • In some cases, to adjust the doses of other medicines.

Taking Plantaben with food, drink and alcohol

  • The fibre can be taken before or after meals.

  • If taken half an hour before meals, it may decrease appetite.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Soluble fibre absorbs inorganic, organic and mineral substances. To avoid the risk of excessive elimination of these substances during pregnancy, it is advisable not to exceed the doses recommended in this leaflet or prescribed by your doctor.

Driving and using machines

No effects have been reported that influence the ability to drive or use dangerous machinery.

Plantaben contains sodium saccharin, sodium bicarbonate and orange yellow colouring S (E-110)

  • Patients on a low-sodium diet should note that this medicine contains 178.26 mg of sodium per sachet.

  • It may cause allergic reactions because it contains orange yellow S (E-110) colouring.

  • It may cause asthma, especially in patients allergic to acetylsalicylic acid.

Composition of Plantaben in one sachet

  • Active ingredient: Plantago ovata seed husk. Each sachet contains 3.5 grams of Plantago ovata seed husk.

  • Other ingredients: Sodium saccharin, sodium bicarbonate, tartaric acid granules, orange essence, yellow-orange colouring S (E-110).
