Do not take AGIOLAX Granulate

If you are allergic or hypersensitive to Plantago ovata, Cassia angustifolia or any of the other ingredients of Agiolax granulate.

If you have intestinal obstruction and stricture (narrowing).

If you have paralytic ileus (acute occlusion of the intestine due to paralysis of bowel movements).

If you have inflammatory diseases of the colon (e.g. Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis).

If you have appendicitis.

If there are any undiagnosed acute or persistent abdominal symptoms, including rectal bleeding.

If you have sudden changes in bowel habit that persist for more than 2 weeks.

If you are unable to have a bowel movement after using a laxative.

If you have diseases of the oesophagus or cardia (the end of the stomach that joins the oesophagus).

If you have diabetes mellitus that is difficult to control.

If you have difficulty swallowing or a throat problem.

 

Take special care with AGIOLAX Granulated

It should not be used daily for a prolonged period of time.

Abuse may cause diarrhoea, with consequent loss of fluid and electrolytes (mainly a decrease in potassium).

Long-term abuse may also aggravate constipation.

Chronic use may cause pigmentation of the colon (colonic pseudomelanosis), which is harmless and will disappear when treatment is withdrawn.

If symptoms worsen or do not improve after 3 days of treatment, consult your doctor.

 

Use of other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. 

 

Not recommended for patients receiving cardiac glycosides (drugs that regulate heart activity) and anti-arrhythmic drugs (e.g. quinidine).

 

Do not co-administer with other hypokalaemia-inducing drugs (e.g. thiazide diuretics, adrenocorticosteroids and liquorice root) as this may promote electrolyte imbalance.

 

The absorption of other co-administered drugs such as minerals, vitamins (B12), cardiac glycosides, coumarin derivatives (anticoagulants), carbamazepine (anti-epileptic) and lithium (used in the treatment of bipolar disorder) may be delayed.

 

After taking any other medicines, wait 30 minutes to 1 hour before taking Agiolax. Similarly, Agiolax should not be taken 30 minutes to 1 hour before taking other medicines.

 

If you are an insulin-dependent diabetic and take Agiolax with meals, it may be necessary to reduce the insulin dose.

 

The use of Plantago ovata seeds together with thyroid hormones requires medical supervision as the dosage of these hormones may need to be adjusted.

 

Taking Agiolax Granulate with food and drink

Do not take Agiolax immediately after a meal.

After eating, wait 30 minutes to 1 hour before taking Agiolax. 

 

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using any medicine.

 

This preparation is excreted in small amounts in breast milk and although there are no data on the possible laxative effects on infants, its use is not recommended in these circumstances.

 

Use in children

Do not administer to children under 12 years of age.

 

Driving and use of machines

No effects on driving and use of machines have been reported.

 

Important information about some of the ingredients of Agiolax Granulate 

This medicine contains sucrose. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to certain sugars, please consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

Instructions for use

Follow your doctor's instructions exactly how to take Agiolax Granulate. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. Agiolax Granulate is taken by mouth. The granulate should be swallowed without dissolving or chewing, with plenty of liquid (1 or 2 glasses), regardless of the type you choose (water, milk, orangeade, etc.). Keep half an hour to an hour apart after taking any other medicines or food. Do not take Agiolax Granulate immediately before going to bed. Agiolax Granulate usually causes bowel movements after 12-24 hours. If symptoms worsen or do not improve after 3 days of treatment, consult your doctor. The duration of treatment should not exceed 1 week. The usual dose is: Adults and children over 12 years of age, It is recommended, preferably, to take one dessert spoon of Agiolax in the morning and another in the evening, although it can be taken in one single dose as long as the dose of 2 teaspoons a day is not exceeded. Elderly: As for adults. If you think that the effect of Agiolax Granulated is too strong or too weak, tell your doctor or pharmacist. If you take more Agiolax Granulate than you should, ask your doctor or pharmacist. The main symptoms are cramps and severe diarrhoea, with consequent loss of fluid and electrolytes, which should be replaced. Treatment should be maintenance, with plenty of fluids. Electrolytes, especially potassium, should be monitored. In case of overdose or accidental ingestion, contact the Poisons Information Service, telephone 915 62 04 20, indicating the medicine and the amount taken. If you forget to take Agiolax Granulate Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. If you have any other questions about the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Indications

Agiolax Granulate is used for : Short-term treatment of occasional constipation.

Contraindications

Like all medicines, Agiolax Granulated may cause side effects, although not everybody suffers from them: At the beginning of the treatment and depending on the dose, some discomfort may appear such as flatulence (gas) and/or a feeling of fullness, characteristic of dietary fibre, which disappear after a few days without the need to stop the treatment. Abdominal spasms and pain. Yellowish or reddish-brownish (depending on pH) discolouration of the urine due to metabolites, which is not significant.  Hypersensitivity reactions (allergy), intestinal or oesophageal obstruction, especially if swallowed with little liquid. If any of the side effects you experience are serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor or pharmacist.

Composition

The active substances are Plantago ovata seeds, Plantago ovata (Ispaghula Husk) seed cuticles, Cassia angustifolia (Sennae fructus) fruits. The other ingredients are Sucrose, Carum carvi essential oil, Salvia officinalis essential oil, Peppermint essential oil, Gum arabic, Talc, Iron oxide red (E172), Iron oxide yellow (E172), Iron oxide black (E172), Paraffin wax solid, Paraffin wax liquid.
