What is VOLTADOL and what is it used forVOLTADOL is a medicine that relieves pain. It belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

This medicine is used for the short-term (maximum 7 days) local symptomatic treatment of pain associated with acute strains, sprains or bruises of the arms and legs resulting from blunt injuries in adolescents from 16 years of age and older and in adults.

Warnings and precautions

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before starting to use this medicine.

- if you have or have ever had bronchial asthma or allergies; you may develop bronchial muscle spasm (bronchospasm), which makes breathing difficult.

- if you notice a skin rash that appears after applying the adhesive dressing. If this happens, remove the sticking plaster immediately and stop treatment.

- if you have kidney, heart or liver disorders, or have had a previous stomach or intestinal ulcer or intestinal inflammation or a tendency to bleed.

Adverse effects can be reduced by using the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible period of time.

Important precautions

- The drug adhesive dressing should not come into contact with or be applied to the eyes or mucous membranes.

- Elderly patients should use this medicine with caution because side effects are more likely to occur.

After removal of the medicated adhesive dressing, avoid exposing the treated area to direct sunlight or radiation in a solarium to reduce the risk of light sensitivity.

Do not use this medicine at the same time as any other medicines containing diclofenac or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and analgesic medicines, whether used externally or taken by mouth.

Children and adolescents

Diclofenac is contraindicated for use in children and adolescents under 16 years of age. There are insufficient data on efficacy and safety in children and adolescents under 16 years of age (see section ‘Do not use VOLTADOL).

Other medicines and VOLTADOL

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or may need to take any other medicines.

Provided this medicine is used correctly, only a small amount of diclofenac is absorbed by the body, so interactions described for medicines containing diclofenac taken by mouth are unlikely to occur.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or intend to become pregnant, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.

Pregnancy

In the first and second trimester of pregnancy or if you wish to become pregnant, this medicine should be used only after consultation with your doctor.

In the last trimester of pregnancy, VOLTADOL should not be used because an increased risk of complications for the mother and child cannot be ruled out (see ‘Do not use VOLTADOL’).

Breast-feeding

Small amounts of diclofenac are excreted in breast milk.

Consult your doctor before starting to use this medicine while breast-feeding. In any case, if you are breast-feeding, VOLTADOL should not be applied directly to the breast area.

Driving and using machines

This medicine has no effect on the ability to drive and use machines.

VOLTADOL contains butylated hydroxyanisole (E 320)

Butylated hydroxyanisole may cause local skin reactions (such as contact dermatitis) or irritation of the eyes and mucous membranes.

If you use more VOLTADOL than you should

If you forget to use VOLTADOL

Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

If you have any other questions about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

4. Possible side effectsLike all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Tell your doctor immediately and stop using the dressing if you notice any of the following side effects:

Sudden itchy skin rash (hives); swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, face, lips, mouth, or throat; difficulty breathing; decreased blood pressure or weakness.

The following side effects may occur:

Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

local skin reactions, such as reddening of the skin, burning sensation, itching, redness of inflamed skin, rash, sometimes with pustules or hives.

Very rare side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 000 people):

hypersensitivity reactions or local allergic reactions (contact dermatitis).

In patients using externally medicinal products from the same group of active substances as diclofenac, there have been isolated reports of generalised skin rash, hypersensitivity reactions such as swelling of the skin and mucous membranes and anaphylactic-type reactions with acute disturbances of circulation regulation and light sensitivity reactions.

The absorption of diclofenac into the body through the skin is very low compared to the concentration of active substance in the blood following oral use of diclofenac. Therefore, the likelihood of adverse effects in the body as a whole (such as gastrointestinal or renal disorders or respiratory difficulties) is very low.

Reporting side effects

If you experience any side effects, please tell your doctor or pharmacist, even if they are not listed in this leaflet. You can also report them directly to the Spanish Pharmacovigilance System for Medicinal Products for Human Use: www.notificaRAM.es.

By reporting adverse effects you can help to provide more information on the safety of this medicine.
