What is Frenadol Decongestant?

Frenadol Decongestant is a medicine with four active ingredients:

  1. Paracetamol, which relieves pain and reduces fever.

  2. Dextromethorphan, which is an antitussive.

  3. Chlorphenamine, which reduces nasal secretion.

  4. Pseudoephedrine, which relieves nasal congestion.

What is Frenadol Decongestant used for?

Frenadol Decongestant capsules are indicated for adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older to relieve the symptoms of colds and flu with moderate or mild pain, such as:

  • Headache.

  • Fever.

  • Non-productive cough such as irritative cough, nervous cough.

  • Nasal congestion.

  • Nasal discharge.

How to take Frenadol Decongestant?

Follow the instructions in the package leaflet or as directed by your pharmacist. If in doubt, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Dosage

  • The recommended dose for adults is 1 capsule every 6 to 8 hours, 3 or 4 times a day, as needed.

  • Preferably take 1 capsule before bedtime.

  • Do not take more than 4 capsules, equivalent to 2 g of paracetamol per day.

  • Recommended dose for adolescents aged 12 to 18 years: 1 capsule every 6 to 8 hours, equivalent to 3 or 4 times a day, as needed.

  • Preferably take 1 dose before bedtime.

  • Do not take more than 4 capsules, equivalent to 2 g of paracetamol per day.

Method of administration

  • Administer orally. Take the capsule with a glass of water.

  • Always use the lowest effective dose.

  • Treatment should be discontinued as symptoms disappear.

  • Consult your doctor if symptoms worsen or persist after 5 days of treatment in adults. Or if the fever persists for more than 3 days.

  • Consult your doctor if symptoms worsen or persist after 3 days in adolescents. Or if the fever persists for more than 3 days.

Use in children

Children under 12 years of age cannot take this medicine.

Use in people over 60 years of age

People over 60 years of age should consult their doctor to see if the dose needs to be adjusted, or if they are taking other types of medication.

Before starting to use the medicine

Taking Frenadol Decongestant with other medicines

  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or may need to take any other medicines.

  • The package leaflet contains extensive information on incompatible medicines, those for which your doctor may need to adjust the dose, or those for which your doctor may advise you to discontinue treatment.

Interference with analytical tests

If you are going to have any diagnostic tests, including blood tests, urine tests or skin tests using allergens, tell your doctor that you are taking this medicine,

as it may alter the results.

Taking Frenadol Decongestant with food, drink and alcohol

  • While taking this medicine, you must not drink alcoholic beverages, as this may increase the adverse effects of this medicine.

  • The use of medicines containing paracetamol by patients who regularly consume alcohol, 3 or more alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine or spirits per day, may cause liver damage.

  • The medicine should not be taken with grapefruit or bitter orange juice, as this may increase the adverse effects of some of its components, dextromethorphan and pseudoephedrine.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

  • Taking medicines during pregnancy can be dangerous for the embryo or foetus and should be monitored by your doctor.

  • This medicine is contraindicated in the first trimester of pregnancy and should not be taken during the remainder of the pregnancy unless your doctor considers it strictly necessary.

  • The four active ingredients in this medicine are excreted in breast milk.

  • Women who are breastfeeding should not take it unless the benefits of treatment for the mother outweigh the possible risks to the infant.

Driving and using machines

It may cause drowsiness. If you notice these effects, avoid driving vehicles or using machines.

Composition of Frenadol Decongestant

  • Active ingredients: Paracetamol 500 mg, chlorphenamine 2 mg (as maleate), dextromethorphan 15 mg (as hydrobromide) and pseudoephedrine 30 mg (as hydrochloride).

  • Excipients: Pregelatinised corn starch, colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, gelatin, erythrosine (E-127), quinoline yellow (E-104), titanium dioxide (E-171), black iron oxide (E-172).

These are red and white opaque hard gelatin capsules with the name ‘Frenadol descongestivo’ screen printed on them. Each pack contains 16 capsules.
