Description

Composition


- Per capsule: 350 mg of cryomilled flowering tops of Crataegus monogyna Jacq. (Lindm.) and C. laevigata (Poiret) D.C. (C. oxyacanthoides Thuill.) (hawthorn).
Indications


- NERVOUSNESS. Symptomatic treatment of nervousness together with [PALPITATIONS].

- INSOMNIA].
Its use is based exclusively on traditional use.

Posology

Dosage:



- Adults, oral:
* Nervousness: 1 capsule, 3 times a day.
* Insomnia: 2 capsules mid-afternoon and 2 capsules before bedtime.
The duration of treatment is 4 weeks. If after 2 weeks the symptoms persist or worsen, it is recommended to consult a doctor and/or pharmacist.

- Children and adolescents under 18 years of age, oral: Safety and efficacy have not been evaluated.


Guidelines for proper administration



Take the capsules whole with a glass of water.

Contraindications



- Hypersensitivity to hawthorn or to any component of the medicinal product.

Precautions



- CARDIOPATHY]. It is recommended to use hawthorn for heart conditions only on prescription, as it can mask the symptoms of serious cardiovascular conditions, delaying their diagnosis. It should also be borne in mind that it may interact with digoxin and beta-adrenergic blockers, used as the treatment of choice in heart failure.

- HYPOTENSION]. Hawthorn may sometimes cause hypotension, so it is advisable to check blood pressure regularly. In case of symptomatic hypotension it may be necessary to reduce the dosage.

Advice to the patient




- If symptoms continue or worsen after 2 weeks of using artichoke, consult a doctor and/or pharmacist.

- It is advisable not to drink alcohol during treatment.

- It may cause drowsiness, so caution is advised when driving.

- Use with caution in patients with heart disease or treated with digitalis.

- It is recommended to notify the doctor if the patient experiences dizziness, especially when getting out of bed or out of a chair.


Special warnings




- Regular monitoring of blood pressure and cardiac function is advised.

Interactions



- Alcohol. Alcohol may potentiate the sedative effects of hawthorn. As a general recommendation, it is advisable to avoid the consumption of alcoholic beverages in people treated with sedatives.

- Antihypertensives. Hawthorn may increase the risk of symptomatic hypotension in combination with these drugs. It is recommended to take extreme precautions by monitoring blood pressure levels.

- Digoxin. Hawthorn may potentiate the effects of digitalis. It is recommended to avoid the association.

- Hypnotics. Hawthorn may potentiate the effects of other hypnotic drugs, such as benzodiazepines, opioid analgesics or H1 antihistamines.

Pregnancy


There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, therefore the use of hawthorn during pregnancy is only accepted if the benefits outweigh the possible risks in the absence of safer therapeutic alternatives.

Breastfeeding


It is not known whether the constituents of hawthorn are excreted in breast milk, and the possible consequences for the infant. It is advised to discontinue breast-feeding or avoid use during lactation.

Children


Safety and efficacy in children and adolescents under 18 years of age have not been evaluated and therefore it is recommended to avoid use.

Elderly


No specific problems have been reported in the elderly.

Effects on driving


Hawthorn may cause drowsiness, substantially affecting the ability to drive and/or operate machinery. Patients should avoid operating dangerous machinery, including automobiles, until they are reasonably certain that they are not adversely affected by the drug treatment.
