Additional recommendations for patients with cold sores.
Cold sores or fever blisters appear due to infection with a virus called Herpes simplex. The first infection usually occurs inside the mouth (often in childhood) and may go unnoticed, but in children it should be diagnosed by a doctor so as not to confuse it with teething or other oral problems.
After this initial infection, the herpes simplex virus remains in the body without causing any symptoms. The infection often presents new outbreaks at other times in life, which usually appear as a result of sunburn, colds, fever, emotions, anxiety, mouth injuries, menstruation, dental or surgical procedures, or allergies to certain medications.
These outbreaks consist of a tingling or itching sensation on the lips followed, after one or two days, by the appearance of several small blisters that then develop into open sores on the lips, which eventually form a scab.
Until the scab appears, a sign that the lesion has healed, the blisters or sores are contagious.
When the itching, tingling or stinging sensation appears, before the blisters appear, this is when the virus is multiplying, and when treatment is most effective. If you apply the product at this stage, you will prevent the virus from multiplying and obtain faster relief from the symptoms.
