Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ginkgo or to any other component of the medicinal product.
Precautions
- DIATHESIS HAEMORRHAGICAE]. Ginkgo has certain antiplatelet effects, which could favour the appearance of haemorrhages, so it is recommended to take extreme precautions in patients with [HEMORRAGIA], pathologies that favour the appearance of haemorrhages such as [TROMBOPENIA], or in which an increase in bleeding time could be dangerous, such as in [PEPTIC ULCER].
On the other hand, the use of ginkgo in patients with [ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION] or [DIABETES] has been associated with cerebral haemorrhages. Although there are no trials to prove this, extreme caution is recommended in these patients.
Patient advice
PATIENT ADVICE:
- Take ginkgo with meals.
Interactions
- Oral anticoagulants. Ginkgo has an antiplatelet effect, so it could potentiate the anticoagulant effects of these medicines, favouring the appearance of haemorrhages. The same effect can be expected with platelet antiaggregants.
Pregnancy
No adequate and well-controlled studies in humans are available. Administration is only acceptable if safer therapeutic alternatives do not exist and the benefits outweigh the possible risks.
Lactation
It is not known whether it is excreted in milk, and what consequences it could have for the infant. It is recommended to discontinue or avoid breast-feeding.
Children
Safety and efficacy in children and adolescents under 18 years of age have not been evaluated and therefore it is recommended to avoid use.
Elderly
No specific problems have been reported in the elderly.
Adverse reactions
Adverse reactions to ginkgo are very rare, mild and transient in nature, and do not usually require discontinuation of treatment.
- Digestive. [DIARRHOEA], [NAUSEA], [VOMITING].
- Neurological/psychological. [HEADACHE].
- Allergic/dermatological. [EXANTHEMATIC RASHES].
Overdose
Symptoms: In case of acute overdose, cramps, spasms, atony and adynamia have been reported in patients. Long-term use of ginkgo has been associated with cases of subdural haematoma.
Treatment: Symptomatic treatment should be instituted.
